I work with students who have developmental disorders such as autism. To be an effective educator for this student population, one must be well-informed in the thought process and learning style. Many of these students "think" in pictures and have extreme difficulty with language-based instruction and social interaction. To teach the "hidden curriculum" I have to use visual social stories. Their skills are often "splintered"-- Gaps between prerequiste skills. Knowing that they process visually, I use visual supports and the structured communication teaching to help fill in those gaps. They are very concrete and visual learners. There are many who fall on the autism spectrum-- Did you know that ADHD children are on this spectrum?

Intelligence Type Tests

Traditional IQ tests ask (and attempt to answer) the question, "How smart am I?" Multiple Intelligence theory, on the other hand, explores, "How am I smart?" The theory of multiple intelligences was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, Professor of Education at Harvard University. His theory suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is limited. Instead of summarizing a person's intelligence in one numerical score, Dr. Gardner proposes identifying what kind of intelligences each individual possesses".
My main intelligence type: Musical. Music Intelligence encompasses the ability to compose and perform musical patterns, and recognize pitches, tones, and rhythms. This type of intelligence is most easily recognized in an environment in which music is important, instruments are readily available, or activities that require rhythm, like singing or dancing. Those autistic students who have echolalic speech do well when taught with music
